Charlotte, NC –The South Carolina Stingrays (20-6-1-3) defeated the Charlotte Checkers (14-7-3-1) 3-2 in overtime Wednesday night at Time Warner Cable Arena. Defenseman Josh Godfrey netted two points including the game-winning goal as the Stingrays pushed their winning streak to eleven games.
After a scoreless first period, the Checkers lit the lamp late in the second period thanks to forward David Marshall’s wrist shot beating Stingrays goaltender Todd Ford low glove-side at 18:10 from Andrew Carroll and Mike Berube. The Checkers outshot the Stingrays in the second period 12 to 10.The Stingrays tied the contest at 8:16 of the third period when forward Gregg Johnson buried a slap shot high glove-side on Checkers goaltender Ryan Munce from the left-wing circle. Younger brother Keith Johnson received the lone assist. Charlotte regained a one-goal lead at 13:20 from left-winger Kenny Roche. Forwards Tyler Doig and Mike Taylor received assists. The Stingrays caught a break late in the period when Checkers defenseman Kevin Schaeffer received a five-minute major for cross-checking against Stingrays forward Nikita Kashirsky at 17:30. Forward Matt Fornataro responded with a power-play tally to tie the game at two at 17:47 from Godfrey and G. Johnson. The tie remained at the end of regulation and overtime would be needed. With a full 2:30 left on the man-advantage, Godfrey hit the twine at 1:41 of overtime from Kashirsky to complete the comeback. Munce finished the night stopping 29 of 32 Stingrays shots while Ford kicked away 27 of 29 Checkers chances. The Stingrays power play finished 2-for-6 as Charlotte ended the night 0-for-3.The Stingrays travel to Charlotte Friday,
